Sex Magic

Sex Magic (2020) is an evening-length work by the Australian-Chinese composer Liza Lim for contrabass flute, alto ocarina, Aztec death whistle, electronics, and an installation of kinetic percussion. It was premiered in December 2020 at The Kitchen NYC as part of Density 2036, and was subsequently premiered at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and at the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin. The work is about an alternate cultural logic of women’s power as connected to cycles of the womb—the life-making powers of childbirth, the world-synchronizing temporalities of the body, and the womb center as a site of divinatory wisdom and utterance.
