TOCCATA E FUGA (Sion, Switzerland)

For the past year, Claire has been working with the Swiss artist Julie Beauvais on a durational version of Salvatore Sciarrino's virtuoso transcription of the Toccata and Fugue in d minor. In this performance, which spans five hours, the concert is turned back into a ritual. Formal, sequenced, repetitive, it offers the audience a collective experience and links the world of the sensitive with the world of the intelligible. Light diffused into the space underlines the music, the two performing bodies, and the tensions at play. The audience members pass or stay for a while, move, circling the performers freely. A work originally intended for the massive forces of the organ, an instrument of tens of thousands of pipes, is re-imagined here for a single pipe.
