In July 2016, leading contemporary flutists will showcase their extraordinary abilities and share their knowledge of modern performance at the inaugural Unbound Flute Festival.

Held at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, the heart of Brisbane’s cultural precinct at South Bank, the Unbound Flute Festival will bring together some of Australia’s most experienced contemporary flute players together with some of the highest profile international artists.

9.30-11.00am: DENSITY DEBRIEF (A)
Claire Chase
Claire will discuss the works she performed in her recital on Friday evening, with participants encouraged to try sections of selected works and openly discuss the intricacies of the techniques involved.

1.15-2.00pm: AMEB NEW FLUTE SYLLABUS (T)

This session will focus on tips and strategies for teaching the extended technique elements in the new (2013) AMEB Flute Syllabus, including the Grade 8 Technical Work and selections from the Manual Lists.

2.00-3.15pm: MAKE IT UP CLUB (N)

How do you play a squiggle? Does ‘improvising’ mean you can just play anything you like? This session will help you get to grips with some of the looser musical structures out there, in a friendly environment.

3.30-5.30pm: MASTERCLASS – CLAIRE CHASE (A)

Sunday, July 3

9.00-12.00pm: SILVER SWARMS PART 1 (ALL)

All festival participants are invited to be a part of these flute ‘flash mobs’, to infiltrate SouthBank with silvery sounds! The SWARMS will be rehearsing and performing throughout the whole day. The works we will perform will be the winners of the UNBOUND Composition Competition – all World Premieres! Each SILVER SWARMS performance is based on easy-to-memorise instructions for notes, sounds and movements. There is no sheet music, no music stands, just swirling sounds that YOU can help to create.
